The City of Nedlands is a local government area in the inner western suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, situated about 7 kilometers (4 miles) west of Perth’s central business district. Known for its high concentration of wealth and high housing values, the area is part of the metropolitan region colloquially referred to as the “golden triangle.”
The City’s origins trace back to the Claremont Road District, established on 30 March 1893 following a petition from ratepayers in the rapidly growing areas of Nedlands and Claremont. Initially, the governance included both areas under the Claremont Road District Board. However, Claremont split away in 1898 to form its own municipal government, the Town of Claremont.
On 12 August 1932, the area was renamed the Nedlands Road District, and on 17 February 1956, it was granted municipal status as the Municipality of Nedlands. The area attained city status on 1 July 1959, becoming the City of Nedlands. It comprises four wards: Melvista, Hollywood, Dalkeith, and Coastal, which continue to exist today.
In 2016, a state government initiative to amalgamate metropolitan local governments led to the expansion of the City of Perth’s boundary to include a portion of the City of Nedlands, encompassing the University of Western Australia and surrounding residential areas. Following a change in government in the 2017 state election, the City of Nedlands faced political pressure to implement infill development and higher residential densities. The Council’s resistance to updating the city’s 30-year-old planning scheme resulted in the imposition of a new planning scheme by the Minister of Planning. This led to a surge in development applications, significant community opposition, and the resignation of key executive staff, including the chief executive officer and director of planning, as well as the mayor.
