Swan Council

The City of Swan is a significant local government area in Western Australia, situated in the eastern metropolitan region of Perth. Encompassing the picturesque Swan Valley and 42 diverse suburbs, it is approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Perth’s central business district. Covering an expansive area of 1,042 square kilometers, which constitutes about 19.4% of the Perth Metro area, the City had an estimated population of 155,653 residents as of 2020.

The demographic makeup of the City of Swan reflects its multicultural character, with 32.7% of its population born overseas, slightly lower than the Greater Perth average of 36.1%. The largest non-English speaking country of birth within the City is India, representing 3.1% of the population, equivalent to 4,163 residents.

Originally formed on 20 February 1970 as the Shire of Swan through the amalgamation of the Shire of Swan-Guildford and the Town of Midland, it was granted city status and adopted its current name on 25 April 2000. The City has seen boundary adjustments over time, notably on 1 July 2016, when the portion of Noranda north of Widgee Road was transferred to the City of Bayswater.
