The City of Wanneroo is a local government area with city status in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. It is situated approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 mi) north of Perth’s central business district, forming part of the northern boundary of the Perth metropolitan area. Wanneroo includes the federal divisions of Cowan, Moore, and Pearce.
The city’s primary commercial and residential centers are located in Wanneroo to the east and Clarkson to the north. Future urban centers are planned at Alkimos, Yanchep, and Two Rocks to support the rapid metropolitan expansion and development in the area. The city is also home to Yanchep and Neerabup National Parks and the Neerabup Industrial Estate in the north.
Historically, Wanneroo was part of the Perth Road District before becoming its own entity. The Wanneroo Road District was established on 31 October 1902 under the Roads Act 1888, named after the Wanneroo wetlands first explored by John Butler in 1834.
With the passage of the Local Government Act 1960, all road boards became shires, and the Shire of Wanneroo was formed on 1 July 1961, encompassing everything north of Beach Road and west of Alexander Drive. The Shire of Wanneroo achieved city status on 31 October 1985 due to the development and population growth around Joondalup.
On 1 July 1998, the City of Wanneroo was split based on the Local Government Advisory Committee’s recommendation. The southwestern section, including Joondalup, became the new City of Joondalup, while the remaining parts formed a reduced Shire of Wanneroo, which quickly regained city status on 1 July 1999. The newly formed city did not have a Shire President as this change occurred before the local government elections to elect a mayor and councillors.
