History of Bassendean

The Town of Bassendean is a local government area located in the northeastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia.

It lies 6 kilometers (4 miles) west of the industrial hub of Midland and about 12 kilometers (7 miles) northeast of Perth’s central business district. The Town spans an area of 10.4 square kilometers (4.0 square miles), maintains 97 kilometers of roads, and had a population of around 15,000 according to the 2016 Census. It is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.

Originally established as the West Guildford Road District on May 10, 1901, it was renamed the Bassendean Road District on July 7, 1922. With the implementation of the Local Government Act 1960, it became the Shire of Bassendean on July 1, 1961, as part of a broader reform of road districts into shires. The area achieved town status and adopted its current name on July 1, 1975.
