History of Kalamunda

The City of Kalamunda is a local government area situated in the eastern metropolitan region of Perth, Western Australia, approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Perth’s central business district. Covering an area of 324 square kilometers (125 square miles), much of the region consists of state forest extending into the Darling Scarp to the east. The Darling Range Road District was officially established on 30 April 1897. On 1 July 1961, it transitioned into the Shire of Kalamunda following the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, which converted all remaining road districts into shires. In 2015, the Shire of Kalamunda began community consultations on the prospect of becoming a city, and on 1 July 2017, it was officially renamed the City of Kalamunda.
