The City of Melville is a local government area located in the southern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. It is situated east of Fremantle and approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Perth’s central business district. Covering an area of 52.73 square kilometers (20.36 square miles), the city had a population of about 98,000 as per the 2016 Census.
The origins of Melville date back to 14 December 1900, when it was established as the East Fremantle Road District under the Roads Boards Act 1871. It was renamed the Melville Road District on 14 June 1901. On 20 July 1923, the district expanded significantly after acquiring a large portion of land from the abolished Jandakot Road District.
With the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, the Melville Road District was reformed and became the Shire of Melville on 1 July 1961. It was granted town status on 28 September 1962, becoming the Town of Melville, and attained city status on 3 May 1968, assuming its current name, the City of Melville.
The City of Melville maintains 463 kilometers of roads and 2.10 square kilometers of parks and gardens, providing extensive infrastructure and recreational spaces for its residents.
