The Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale is a local government area located in the outer southeastern metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia. Covering an expansive area of 905 square kilometres (349 sq mi), it is home to a population of approximately 32,173 people as of the 2021 Census. Despite its name, neither Serpentine nor Jarrahdale serves as the largest settlement within the Shire; that distinction belongs to Byford. Similarly, Mundijong serves as the administrative center rather than either Serpentine or Jarrahdale.
The history of the Shire dates back to the establishment of the Serpentine-Jarrahdale Road District on 8 August 1913. This entity was formed through the amalgamation of the Serpentine Road District (established in 1894) and the Jarrahdale Road District (established in 1902). On 1 July 1961, following the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, the road district was transformed into the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, aligning with reforms that converted all remaining road districts into shires.
An important expansion occurred on 17 June 1977, when Byford was acquired from the Shire of Armadale–Kelmscott, further shaping the Shire’s current boundaries and community profile.
Recent events have drawn attention to the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, particularly following the 2021 local government election. Councillor Rob Coales, representing the North Ward, spearheaded efforts to investigate alleged fraud during the election. His motion garnered unanimous support, highlighting ongoing civic engagement and scrutiny within the Shire’s governance processes.
