History of South Perth

The City of South Perth is a prominent local government area situated in the inner southern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, just 4 kilometres south of the central business district. Covering an area of 19.9 square kilometres, it encompasses a diverse range of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. The City boasts 203 kilometres of roads and over 4.3 square kilometres of parks and gardens, contributing to its appeal as a suburban haven close to the city centre. As of the 2016 Census, it was home to approximately 42,000 residents.

Geographically, the City of South Perth forms a peninsula bounded by the Swan and Canning rivers on three sides, offering picturesque waterfront views and recreational opportunities.

The area’s local governance history dates back to 9 June 1892 when the South Perth Road District was established. It attained municipality status as the Municipality of South Perth on 21 February 1902 but temporarily reverted to a road district on 1 March 1922. Regaining municipality status on 1 March 1956, it achieved city status on 1 July 1959, marking its importance and growth within the Perth metropolitan area.

In 2014, the Western Australian State Government proposed a local government reform plan that included amalgamating the City of South Perth with the Town of Victoria Park and parts of the City of Canning. A significant poll took place in January–February 2015, where electors were asked to vote on whether to proceed with the amalgamation. To prevent the merger, at least 50% of electors from each local government needed to participate, with more than half voting against the proposal. Ultimately, 50.83% of South Perth’s electors voted, with a resounding 77.75% against the amalgamation. Despite a lower turnout in Victoria Park, a clear majority also opposed the merger. This outcome effectively halted the amalgamation plans, allowing the City of South Perth and the Town of Victoria Park to remain independent entities.
