History of Victoria Park

The Town of Victoria Park is a local government area located in Western Australia, covering an area of 17.62 square kilometers in metropolitan Perth, the state capital. As of the 2016 census, it had a population of approximately 35,000 residents. Positioned on the southern side of the Swan River, it is situated to the southeast of the Perth central business district. The area is well-connected to surrounding regions: it links to Fremantle and South Perth via Canning Highway, to the Perth CBD through Graham Farmer Freeway and The Causeway, to Belmont and Perth Airport by Great Eastern Highway, and to Cannington via Shepperton Road and Albany Highway. Additionally, the Perth–Armadale rail line passes through Burswood, defining the eastern boundaries of Lathlain and Carlisle.

Victoria Park is bordered by the City of Belmont to the east, the City of Canning to the south, the City of South Perth to the west, and the City of Vincent and the City of Perth to the north.

The area first established its local government with the Victoria Park Road District on 17 May 1894. This district was reconstituted as the Municipality of Victoria Park on 30 April 1897. However, it was amalgamated into the City of Perth on 1 November 1917.

The modern Town of Victoria Park was initially established as the Town of Shepperton on 1 July 1994, following a decision by the Government of Western Australia to restructure the City of Perth and create three new municipalities: the Town of Shepperton, Town of Vincent, and the Town of Cambridge. The Town of Shepperton was subsequently renamed Victoria Park on 2 November 1994.

The Town of Victoria Park today is a vibrant local government area with a rich history and diverse community, offering a blend of residential, commercial, and recreational amenities for its residents.
