The City of Vincent is a local government area situated in Western Australia, covering approximately 10.4 square kilometers (4.0 sq mi) in metropolitan Perth. It is located about 3 km from the Perth central business district. The City maintains 139 kilometers of roads and 104 hectares of parks and gardens, serving a population of over 33,000 as recorded in the 2016 Census.
The name “City of Vincent” is derived from Vincent Street, believed to be named by George Vincent, the chief draftsman in the Lands Department, after himself around 1876. George Vincent received the first Crown grant of Perth land on the north side of Vincent Street, east of Charles Street.
In May 1895, the rapidly developing areas including Leederville and West Leederville were officially recognized as the Leederville Roads Board. This entity became a municipality in 1895, and by April 1897, it was divided into north, south, and central wards, reflecting a population growth that surpassed one thousand people.
The greater Perth movement of 1914 led to the amalgamation of the municipalities of North Perth, Leederville, and Perth, with Victoria Park joining in 1917. This restructuring effort aimed to streamline administration and governance in the expanding metropolitan area.
The modern City of Vincent was formed on 1 July 1994 as part of the Government of Western Australia’s restructuring of the City of Perth. This restructuring created three new local governments: the Town of Vincent, the Town of Cambridge, and the Town of Shepperton (now the Town of Victoria Park), along with a smaller City of Perth. Vincent attained city status on 1 July 2011, becoming the City of Vincent.
In 2014, a municipal reform proposal aimed to abolish the City of Vincent and distribute its territory between the City of Perth and the City of Stirling. An alternative proposal suggested amalgamating Vincent with Perth. However, these negotiations ultimately failed, and the reform process was abandoned, leaving the boundaries of the City of Vincent unchanged.
