History of Fremantle

The City of Fremantle is a local government area located in the southern part of Perth, Western Australia. Covering an area of 19.0 square kilometers (7.3 square miles), it is situated approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of Perth’s central business district.

The city is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed the area for George IV, declaring it part of New Holland (Australia) not included within the territory of New South Wales. In 1848, a town trust was established, consisting of a chairman and a committee of five members. Over the next twenty-three years, they utilized convict labor to construct roads and numerous public buildings. By 1870, Fremantle had grown to a population of 3,796, prompting local colonists to seek greater control over their affairs.

The Municipality of Fremantle was officially formed on February 21, 1871, with a council comprising a chairman and nine councillors. Among the council’s significant achievements were the establishment of a reliable supply of clean water and the implementation of a more efficient sanitation system. By 1928, Fremantle’s population had reached 22,340, with an annual revenue of £73,354, justifying a claim for city status. Fremantle was granted city status on June 3, 1929, as part of the Centenary of Western Australia celebrations.

North Fremantle, initially part of Fremantle, separated in October 1895 to become an independent municipality, with Daniel Keen Congdon serving as its first mayor. However, the two municipalities were reunited by an order of the Governor in Executive Council on November 1, 1961.
