History of Joondalup

The City of Joondalup is a local government area in Perth, Western Australia. Its central business district is located in the suburb of Joondalup and includes the town centers of Hillarys and Warwick.

Before the 1970s, the area now known as the City of Joondalup was sparsely populated. Significant growth occurred during the 1980s and 1990s, driven in part by State Government policies designating Joondalup as a regional center. This period saw the extension of the Mitchell Freeway and the construction of the Joondalup railway line.

Until 1998, the area was managed by the City of Wanneroo and its predecessors. An independent commission recommended the establishment of Joondalup from the coastal regions of Wanneroo, leading to the formation of the City of Joondalup on July 1, 1998.
