Before European settlement, the land now known as the City of Armadale was inhabited by the Aboriginal Noongar people.
Until 1894, the area was part of the Canning Road District.
The origins of the City of Armadale trace back to the creation of the Kelmscott Road District on December 14, 1894, formed from parts of the Fremantle and Jandakot Road Districts. It was renamed the Armadale-Kelmscott Road District on March 24, 1910.
With the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, it became the Shire of Armadale–Kelmscott on July 1, 1961. On July 1, 1977, the Byford Ward was transferred to the Shire of Serpentine–Jarrahdale.
The area was designated the Town of Armadale on July 1, 1979, and gained city status on November 16, 1985, adopting its current name, the City of Armadale.
The City of Armadale manages 615 km of roads and over 14 km² of parks and gardens.
